![]() ![]() ![]() My tiny Ryobi P119 lithium/nicad slow charger wouldn't shut off at full charge, both for me and some other local person, a possibly serious hazard because lithiums don't like to be overcharged at all. Also a few years earlier the predecessor model for this drill had been recalled for the same problem. One of their investigators came out and took loads of photos. This was a couple of years after the warranty expired, but Ryobi replaced it free anyway, maybe because I had contacted the Consumer Product Safety Commission and told them to give my information to the manufacturer. The big transistor in a Ryobi drill ruptured, after burning and melting its circuit board. I've built chicken coops, runs, fences, and made deck repairs in addition to all the light-duty stuff inside homes with these. I've been using a Bosch 18v set of cordless drill & impact driver for about 7-8 years on the same 1.3Ah battery packs and they are still going strong. The big thing is if you buy one brand of cordless tool, you're probably going to stick with that brand because of the batteries. People get real tribal about their tool brands. ![]() That said, Makita, Bosch, Dewalt, and Milwaukee will come up a lot based on personal preference, but torque specs (for driving long or wide fasteners) come pretty close and I bet most users wouldn't notice a difference using them in a blind test. edit I just checked the price of the Ryobi drill/driver combo to the one that I linked (on sale) and with the $10 difference, I would definitely buy the Rigid line. If you like what they offer, they're not bad tools. Ryobi's line is looked down upon because the electric motors aren't as nice as the better-quality brands (less efficient for torque and battery life), but they're pretty newbie friendly/fine for homeowner duty, affordable, and the tool line is expansive. May seem weird to have two tools that seemingly overlap, but trust me on this one - picking up an impact driver is one of the best decisions I have made in this life. ![]()
